Scholars Compete at SkillsUSA State Conference

Scholars competed at the SkillsUSA State Conference, April 10, 2019 through April 12, 2019 with awards announced on Saturday, April 13, 2019.  This group of scholars brought home the most awards by a Christian County Delegation.  Many thanks to the hard work and dedication of advisors Sean Conley, Ricky Peterson, Betty Adams, and Nathan Hicks.  Mr. Conley was named the Kentucky State Advisor of the Year and the Gateway Academy Chapter was awarded the State Chapter of Excellence.

Scholars brought home 10 1st place finishes, 7 2nd place finishes, and 8 3rd place finishes.  They were also awarded $128,000 in scholarships to Sullivan University for various culinary and robotics events.  To see pictures of the winners, click the link at the bottom of the listing of awards.

1st Place

30 Second Elevator Speech - Deontreion Simmons

Cake Decorating - Elizabeth Bronaugh ($16,000 scholarship)

Team Debate - Rachel Baker and Braden Howell

Culinary Arts - Marcus Crockam ($16,000 scholarship)

Mobile Robotics - Joshua Bush and McKay Dunn ($16,0000 scholarship each)

Urban Search and Rescue - Jadyn Hicks and Will Knight

T-Shirt Design - Koryn Hicks

Middle School Division 3D Print Design - Larry Johnson

Middle School Division Team Engineering Challenge - Steven McAskill, Donovan Sharber, and Joshua Owens

Middle School Division Urban Search and Rescue - Donovan Sharber and Steven McAskill

2nd Place

Cake Decorating - Brooke Parker ($10,000 scholarship)

Photo Art Display - Matthew Floyd

Extemporaneous Writing - Jadyn Hicks

Culinary Arts - MyDaejah Montgomery ($10,000 scholarship)

Electrical Wiring - Austin Gee

Mobile Robotics - Tyler Daley and John Wills ($10,000 scholarship each)

Urban Search and Rescue - Ian Gentry and Eric Hines

3rd Place

Commercial Baking - Mary Poe ($6,000 scholarship)

Culinary Arts - Amaria Thompson ($6,000 scholarship)

All first place winners will be competing at the National SkillsUSA Conference in June.
