On March 9, 2019, the Gateway Academy VEX Robotics team competed at the state VEX Robotics competition in Shelbyville, KY. Two Gateway teams formed an alliance after qualifying matches and eliminated approximately 54 teams from across the state to win the state title.

Nathan Hicks is the coach of the teams.  Students begin thinking about the design of their robots near the end of April when the new game is announced by VEX.  The season officially begins in November.  During the current school year, teams E and B, who formed the alliance to win the state championship, had won 17 tournament championships in three different states.

This marks the first time a team from Western Kentucky has won the state championship.

Members of the teams are DeMarion Beckem, Braden Howell, Ian Gentry, Josh Bush, Jadyn Hicks, McKay Dunn, Calvin Demps, and Daniel Macario.
