Kindergarten Entry Age Cutoff Moves to August 1; CCPS Accepting Requests for Early Student Entrance to Kindergarten

District-wide Kindergarten Registration Date Set for April 21 (flyer *attached)

Parents/guardians should take note of the important change recently made to the entrance age of children to begin kindergarten for the 2017-18 school year. According to Senate Bill 24, the birthday cutoff date for kindergarten has moved from October 1, to two months earlier on August 1. This means that incoming kindergarten students must have turned five (5) before or by August 1 to enroll in school for the 2017-18 school year.

In the past, CCPS has received requests for early student entrance to school. In response to requests like this, the Christian County Board of Education voted at a recent meeting to revise its policy regarding “entrance age.” The revisions to this policy, outline a process which parents and guardians may take to request their child enter school earlier than the August 1st date mentioned above.

In summary, CCPS has a process in place for parents/guardians to petition their child’s early entrance into kindergarten (outlined below). The deadline for written requests is March 31, 2017. To read the full “early entrance” policy with recent amendments, please click HERE.

Parents/guardians seeking early entrance for their child(ren) should:

·         Request a petition form for early entrance from your child’s zoned school.  To view your child’s zoned school, click HERE.  Parents/guardians should state reasons & child’s age for early entrance when completing a petition form.

·         Contact the school to schedule a time to for the student to take the Brigance Assessment. This assessment is taken by the child to determine student’s readiness for entry into school. In addition, there is a portion on this assessment which is to be completed by the parent/guardian. There is a $25 fee for this assessment to be paid by the parent.

·         The completed petition form and Brigance Assessment is then submitted and reviewed by the district’s Early Entrance Committee and the parent/guardian is later notified of the decision to approve or deny early enrollment.

**The district reserves the discretion to deny early enrollment based on social-emotional readiness of the child. Considerations may also include availability of space and funding.**

Upon enrollment for the first time in any public school in Christian County, the parent/guardian shall provide:

·         A certified copy of the student’s birth certificate or other reliable proof of the student’s identity and age with an affidavit explaining the inability to produce a copy of the birth certificate.
